The name “amethyst” literally means “not drunk” or “sober”. This comes from a Greek mythology. For the Greeks and Romans, amethyst represented the stone of Bacchus. At that time they drank their wine in amethyst cups to avoid drunkenness. They also wore jewelry to pay tribute to Bacchus.
